Transforming post-conflict areas in northern Kenya into world-class, community-led tourism destinations.
The Opportunity
Northern Kenya holds some of the country's most spectacular and biodiverse landscapes, yet decades of cyclical conflict, poor road access and a reputation for insecurity kept tourists, investment and economic opportunity out. However, over the last five years, the context has transformed. Peace has taken hold across formerly volatile areas due to the work of NGOs and government agencies. This is opening a window of opportunity to develop off-the-beaten-path, ethical and experiential eco-tourism at a time when global demand for this type of travel is fast growing. Equally, with park entry prices for the iconic parks in the south having risen, northern Kenya can offer a more affordable, adventurous and authentic alternative. The question isn't whether this region will open to tourism: it's who will shape how that happens.
Return on Investment
Our revenue model is built around four complementary streams, all live today and generating income.
| Revenue Stream | Description | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Facilitated Journeys | End-to-end guided trips into northern Kenya's wildest terrain: hiking safaris, immersive camping and cultural expeditions we run ourselves. | Live |
| Curated Journeys | Bookings and curated trips to Kenya's iconic destinations: Nairobi, the Masai Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo and the coast. | Live |
| Expeditions | Scheduled small-group trekking and camping expeditions with fixed departure dates. | Live |
| Campsites | A growing network of wild, community-hosted campsites across northern Kenya. | Live |
- We tailor the investment structure to the investor (equity stake, revenue share, or concessional loan) rather than a one-size-fits-all instrument.
- First-mover positioning in an emerging, genuinely unclaimed destination, backed by trust relationships and community access that cannot be replicated quickly by a later entrant.
- A model built for regional scale: the same approach is directly replicable in other post-conflict landscapes across East Africa, giving the business room to grow well beyond its first market.
We are committed to reinvesting profits into the organisation's growth, and to full transparency on both financial and impact performance with anyone who invests alongside us.
Why Ajabu Wild
We didn't just discover this region; we contributed to its transformation from violence to peace, and our mission is designed to sustain it.
- Co-founder Dr Theo Hollander served as Regional Director of Interpeace in East Africa, one of the world's leading peacebuilding organisations, and helped establish many of the community structures now forming the backbone of our tourism partnerships.
- Co-founder Dharini Nathwani brings a decade of designing and leading wilderness journeys across Kenya, with deep relationships with local guides, rangers and communities.
- Together, over 40 years of combined experience in international development, peacebuilding and wilderness travel, and trust relationships with community leaders, county governments and conservancies that took years to build and cannot be replicated quickly by outsiders.
Impact by Design
This isn't just a tourism business; it's a proof of concept for a model built to work in post-conflict landscapes.
Conservation
Tourism revenue makes community conservancies financially viable, strengthening the incentive to protect wildlife and habitat.
Peacebuilding
Revenue is channelled to community-led conflict prevention structures, reducing the drivers of violence and increasing the incentives for peace.
Sustainable Development
Direct revenue, job creation and indirect supply-chain income that isn't dependent on aid.
Climate Resilience
Tourism as a climate-resilient economic diversification, reducing vulnerability to climate shocks.
Gender & Inclusion
Community co-creation actively involves women and youth in tourism governance and income.
Replicability
A model built for post-conflict landscapes across East Africa and beyond.
